Condensed Matter Experiments (CME)

Welcome to the Experimental Condensed Matter Physics group at IISER Kolkata
Condensed matter physics is the study of how the physical properties of solids and liquids arise from the interactions among their constituent electrons and atoms. Typically, these properties are not simply reducible to the behaviour of the constituent particles and include emergent phenomena such as ferromagnetism and superconductivity.

Our group's research covers a broad range of contemporary topics including

  • The electronic structure of correlated electron systems
  • Physics of topologically non-trivial materials
  • Phase transitions
  • Spintronics
  • Light-matter interaction in semiconductors
  • Electron and nuclear spin manipulation for quantum information applications
We employ a variety of niche experimental techniques, including Raman spectroscopy at high pressures, terahertz and ultrafast pump-probe spectroscopy, nuclear magnetic and electron spin resonance, luminescence spectroscopy in pulsed magnetic fields, and synchrotron-based photoelectron spectroscopy, and transport measurements at low temperatures and high magnetic fields.
Our group members have published their research in top-tier journals and have strong collaborations with other research groups both within and outside our institution.
We welcome inquiries from potential collaborators, prospective graduate students, and postdoctoral researchers interested in joining our group. Please feel free to explore our website to learn more about our research, publications, and group members.
