Research areas

  • 1. Investigations of quantum effects at extreme conditions of pressure and temperature; novel phase transitions through structural and electronic transport investigations; XRD, Raman, and resistance experiments at high pressures and low temperatures; strongly correlated electron systems 2. Investigations of elements and minerals for understanding the interior of Earth and other planetary systems

Squeezing materials at extremely high pressures using diamond anvil cell modifies the interatomic separation significantly, which enhances the fundamental quantum interactions. Studying the physical properties under extreme conditions can lead to insights into the quantum effects that lead to novel physical properties. In our laboratory, we create extreme high pressures and investigate the materials through synchrotron-based x-ray diffraction measurements; micro Raman spectroscopy; electrical, heat, and optical transport measurements. Our main interest lies in studying 2D materials, multiferroic oxides, perovskites, double perovskites, etc. We also investigate heat transport and mineral phases to understand the structure and dynamics of the planetary interior including Earth. For this purpose, we create extreme conditions of pressure and temperature using the laser-heated diamond anvil cell facility relevant to the planetary interior.
